Known famously as an oil painting by 17th century Dutch Painter, Johannes Vermeer. The painting has culturally impacted a historical novel, also entitled Girl with a Pearl Earring(1999) fictionalising the premises of the painting’s creation. In the novel, A fictional servant named Griet is hired as Johannes Vermeer’s assistant. As the duo becomes close, he asks her to model for his painting while wearing his wife’s pearl earrings. The novel went on to inspire a 2003 film and 2008 play of the same name. The film featured Scarlett Johansson as Griet, the girl with the pearl earring.
